Recently, I was talking with a friend in the double glazing Industry.He runs a upvc window manufacturing business supplying the trade upvc window markets.His double glazing prices are a fair bit higher than the ones on this site.
He nearly always complains that my company sells upvc windows too cheaply, and that in general cheap upvc windows aren't any good.As I've known him for a good few years I decided to take him to task on this occasion.Firstly lets look at his arguments.
1) German upvc window profiles are 'better' than ones extruded in the UK as they are more expensive to buy and are therefore of higher quality.
Sadly his perception of better quality windows is based purely on the fact,that if something is more expensive to buy it is automatically better.The only way he knows this is from advertising and marketing designed to tell him it is.I offered this reply;
' Look Dave you know those expensive steaks you can buy in the super market the ones advertised on TV by the celebrity chef,with the fancy looking packaging'
'Yeah I know the one's'
'well do you which farm they came from?,or what the cow ate? grass,grain,did it have steroids added to it's water supply'
'what are you saying' quips Dave
' You don't know these things in fact you can't but you blindly accept that because it's the dearest product on the shelf it most surely follow, that it is the best, and anything lower in price is automatically inferior'
On a bit of a roll with the steak versus double glazing prices argument I added
' A local butcher selling locally sourced,grass fed meat is cheaper than the super markets best'
I added ' It stands to reason lower over heads the local butcher has no TV chef to pay,No TV advert,No media marketing campaign,No PR campaign,No expensive packaging,No large transport costs,expensive staff,store etc - Yet the butcher is better!
So there you have it if your looking at double glazing prices, think steak!.No the far bigger picture is that never ever assume a cheap double glazing price means the product is rubbish - Take off the blinkers and realise the bigger picture and don't be a sucker to high double glazing prices!.
